§ 01Introduction
Your privacy matters. This policy explains clearly and honestly what data this site collects, why it collects it, and what it does with it.
MathsTricks & Calculus ("the site," "we," "us") is an educational website dedicated to teaching calculus and mathematics in plain English. We are committed to protecting the privacy of every visitor, and particularly that of students who use this site to learn.
This Privacy Policy applies to all pages hosted at mathstricks.com and any subdomains associated with it. By continuing to use the site, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this policy. If you do not agree with any part of it, please discontinue use of the site.
We collect as little information as possible. We do not sell your data. This site is partly supported by Google AdSense, which — only if you consent via the cookie banner or "Cookie Settings" — may show you personalised advertising based on your interests; if you do not consent, you will still see ads, but they will not be personalised to you. We use the information we do collect solely to keep the site running, understand how it is being used, serve and (where consented) personalise advertising, and reply to messages you send us voluntarily.
§ 02Information We Collect
We collect two types of information: information you give us directly, and information collected automatically when you visit the site.
Information You Give Us Directly
If you contact us by email, you may provide your name, email address, and a message. Providing this information is entirely voluntary. We do not require registration, and do not ask for your date of birth, physical address, or any other personal details beyond what you choose to include in your message.
- Name: used only to address you in our reply.
- Email address, used only to reply to your message. Never shared, never added to a mailing list without your explicit consent.
- Message content: used only to respond to your specific question or request. May be reviewed if it contains a report of an error on the site, so that the error can be corrected.
Information Collected Automatically
Like virtually all websites, this site collects certain technical information automatically when you visit. This may include your approximate geographic region (derived from your IP address), the browser and device type you are using, which pages you visited and in what order, and how long you spent on each page. This information is collected in aggregate: it is not linked to your name or identity.
This aggregate data helps us understand which topics students find most useful, which pages may need clearer explanations, and whether the site is functioning correctly on different devices and browsers. We do not use it to build individual profiles of visitors.
§ 04How We Use the Information We Collect
We use information for exactly one category of purposes: operating and improving this free educational resource.
Specifically, information collected through this site is used to:
- Reply to messages and questions sent to us by email or phone.
- Correct mathematical errors or unclear explanations identified through user feedback.
- Understand which pages and topics are most visited so we can prioritise new content appropriately.
- Diagnose and fix technical problems with the site.
- Understand the geographic spread of our audience at a country level, so we can, for example, ensure our examples are relevant to university curricula in the regions our students are based.
We do not use your information for marketing. We do not sell your information to any third party under any circumstances. We do not use your information to make automated decisions about you. We do not pass your contact details to any other organisation.
§ 05Data Storage and Security
We store the minimum data necessary and protect it with reasonable technical measures.
Messages sent to us by email are stored on secure servers. We retain these only as long as is reasonably necessary to respond to your message and to act on any feedback or error reports contained within it. We do not retain contact data indefinitely: messages are periodically reviewed and cleared once the relevant action has been taken.
No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure. While we use reasonable measures to protect the information we hold, we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you are sending us sensitive information, please be aware of this limitation.
Analytics data, if used, is held by our analytics provider on their servers and subject to their own privacy policy. We select analytics providers that are compliant with applicable data protection legislation and that process data in a privacy-respecting manner.
Third-Party Services
This site uses Google Fonts to serve the typefaces used in the design. Google Fonts may collect technical data about the request (such as your IP address and browser type) in order to serve the font files.
This site also uses Google AdSense to display advertising that helps cover hosting and development costs. AdSense may set cookies and collect technical data (such as your IP address, browser type, and pages viewed) to serve and measure ads, and, where you have given consent, to personalise them. AdSense only activates after you accept advertising cookies via the cookie banner or "Cookie Settings" link. For more information on how Google uses this data, see Google's advertising privacy policy.
§ 06Your Rights
You have rights over your personal data. Here is what they are and how to exercise them.
Under data protection legislation applicable in many jurisdictions, including the UK GDPR, EU GDPR and similar laws, you may have the following rights regarding personal data we hold about you:
- Right of access, you may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Right of rectification: if data we hold about you is inaccurate, you may request that we correct it.
- Right of erasure: you may request that we delete personal data we hold about you, subject to any legal obligations to retain it.
- Right to restrict processing: you may ask us to stop using your data while a dispute about its accuracy or our basis for using it is resolved.
- Right to object, you may object to certain uses of your data, including direct marketing (though we do not conduct any).
- Right to data portability: you may request a copy of data you have provided to us in a commonly-used electronic format.
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the details on our Contact page. We will respond to all legitimate requests within 30 days. There is no charge for exercising these rights unless requests are manifestly unfounded or excessive, in which case a reasonable fee or refusal may apply.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the relevant data protection supervisory authority in your country.
§ 07Children and Young People
This site is designed for students of all ages, including those in high school. We take care to handle young people's data responsibly.
This site does not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 without appropriate parental or guardian consent. Our contact details are intended for students who are able to submit inquiries independently or with parental awareness. We do not create user accounts, we do not store browsing histories linked to individuals, and we do not build profiles of young people.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe that your child has submitted personal information to us without your consent, please contact us immediately and we will delete the information concerned.
§ 08Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The date at the top of the page always reflects when it was last revised.
We will not make changes to this policy that materially reduce your privacy rights without providing reasonable notice. If significant changes are made, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site after any changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, or about how we handle your information, please get in touch and we will respond as soon as we are able.
